Cemex launched its first concrete with zero net CO2 emissions on the world market through its Vertua line, which focuses on sustainable products. Its arrival in countries like Mexico will take place in the following months.

The production of this cement is part of the Climate Action strategy announced by the company at the beginning of 2020, in which it set the goal of reducing CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious products by 35% by 2030.

It is created with a geopolymer base that managed to reduce carbon emissions by 70% without compromising the quality and performance of the material. The rest of the CO2 produced is offset by the participation of the cement company in reforestation projects. This product was developed at Cemex’s Global Research and Development Center in Switzerland.

In the specific case of Europe, it was proposed to reduce the production of this gas in its operations by 55% for the same year. The effectiveness of the new cement was tested on this continent.

This material has been used in London to build HS2, the world’s most sustainable high-speed railway.

By using this low carbon concrete, a total of 12 tons of carbon should be saved once construction is complete, with an additional offset of 17 tons of residual CO2.
